Ophthalmic Antiviral and Antifungal Drugs

Viral and fungal eye infections are less common than bacterial infections but can be more severe and vision-threatening. Ophthalmic antiviral and antifungal drugs are essential for managing these conditions and preventing permanent ocular damage.

Antiviral ophthalmic drugs are primarily used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses, such as herpes simplex keratitis. These medications work by inhibiting viral replication, allowing the immune system to control the infection. Early initiation of antiviral therapy is critical to prevent corneal scarring and vision loss.

Antiviral drugs are available in topical and oral forms, depending on infection severity. Long-term therapy may be required in recurrent cases to reduce the risk of flare-ups.

Antifungal ophthalmic drugs are used to treat fungal keratitis, a serious condition often associated with eye trauma or contact lens use. Fungal infections are challenging to treat due to slow drug penetration and prolonged treatment duration.

Antifungal eye medications require strict adherence to dosing schedules and close medical supervision. Delayed treatment can result in severe complications, including corneal perforation.

Accurate diagnosis through laboratory testing is crucial before initiating antiviral or antifungal therapy. These drugs play a vital role in preserving vision when used promptly and appropriately.
